Senior A Basketball South Island Secondary Schools’ Tournament

Joanna MacAskill —

The Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora Senior A basketball team travelled down to Dunedin to compete at South Islands’ last week, 30 August – 2 September.

After convincingly winning their pool of Otago Girls’ and Waimea College, the team proceeded to the quarterfinal. They were up against a familiar St Margaret's College team, and despite a well-fought game, the fell short and lost 58-50.

The following day they played Nayland College in a must-win game to book their ticket to Nationals. The team came out on court and played their best game of the season, starting on a 18-2 lead and securing their spot at Nationals with a 72-42 point win. The final game at South Island’s was against a strong Columba College team who defeated the team 83-66, and Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora finished in 6th place.

The team now have their sights set on Nationals which takes place in Palmerston North, in the holidays, 25 – 30 September!

Until then they will continue to train hard and have fun before doing some damage up North!
