Senior Prizegiving was once again held at CBHS hall on 6 December. Parents and guests were welcomed to the ceremony by the Kapa Haka group. The Howell Travelling Scholarship
The Edwin Howell Travelling Scholarship in Literature was established in memory of her husband – by Dr Brenda Blackburn who attended Christchurch Girls’ High School from 1933 – 1937.
The best Year 13 students who have a background of participation in the School’s literature competitions are nominated for the Scholarship and sit a viva voce examination conducted by a representative of the English Department of Canterbury University and a member of the school’s English Department.

The Ballantyne’s trophy for leadership for the Year 11 student who has most worthily upheld the traditions of the school and has been fully involved in the wider life of the school.

The Olive Calloway special prize for service by a senior student
Mrs June Burns has donated a prize in memory of her aunt, Miss Olive Calloway, who was a student of our school from 1926-1930. Olive Calloway worked voluntarily for many years in the community. The prize is to recognise service by a senior student.

This prize is awarded to a Year 13 student who has been a loyal and stalwart member of the school and who will be continuing her education in the tertiary field.

The late Hugh McDougall Rankin established this trust to support students of the Sciences in furthering their education to contribute to the technological wealth of New Zealand.

The Al-Ani Memorial Prize
This prize has been donated in memory of Dr Al-Ani, the father of 3 former students. Dr Al-Ani lost his life in the February 2011 earthquake. It is awarded to the Year 13 student who has achieved highly in the field of science, who has consistently displayed positive citizenship and is undertaking tertiary study in the biomedical area.

The Catherine Peters Memorial Prize for Enthusiasm

This prize has been donated by the family of Catherine Peters, a former and much-loved student of the school, who died in a tragic accident shortly after leaving the school.

The second award was Ka Hāro te Manu the prize for the Top Year 13 Māori student. The name of this award means 'the bird soars', a fitting name indeed for our high-flying top Māori student.

THE PROXIME ACCESSIT 2019
The Proxime Accessit came to us from Heaton Intermediate. She is a true academic who has continually strived for the best possible results. She has gained Excellence endorsement for every course she has taken and gained an Excellence endorsed NCEA Level 1 and Level 2. She is a calm, determined and well-focused young woman who is well-organized and approaches everything she does in a positive manner. Throughout her time at Christchurch Girls' High School she has won numerous prizes across several subject areas - Languages, Commerce, Science, Mathematics, and Social Sciences. She balances this with concern for people and has contributed actively to Students Against Driving Drunk and Amnesty International. As a Peer Support leader and a Peer tutor, she has shown empathy, tolerance and kindness, and stands as a hallmark of the school's values.

FLORAL TRIBUTES AT THIS POINT
The Dux came to us from Cobham Intermediate. She is a young woman with an exceptional mind who embraces academic challenges. She has consistently gained Excellence grades since Year 9 and has NCEA endorsed with Excellence at both Level 1 and Level 2. A critical, independent thinker, she has been awarded prizes in English, Languages and Art History in the last few years. She is a mature, reflective thinker who also understands the importance of service and acts on this. In her role as Charities Prefect and a leader in Amnesty International, she has shown that when it matters, she steps up. She has compiled an enviable academic record, and in the last three years has consistently gained Excellence grades. She approaches her academic work with a can-do attitude and brings a superb breadth of knowledge to all her subjects.
