Acland House

CGHS Publications —

Acland House is situated at 85 Papanui Road. The house was built in c.1890 by John Rutland (1825-97) who had purchased the property between 1865 and 1867. After Rutland’s death the property was sold to Robert Struthers (c.1842-1906) of the hardware firm Mason Struthers in 1899 and the property was named Craigie-Lea.

The Struthers family sold the property in 1907 to William Strange (c.1833-1914) of Strange’s Department Store. The house was then known as Wardington by the Strange family. In 1922 Strange’s heirs transferred the property to the Canterbury College for use as a boarding hostel. Since that date the site has been developed as a hostel for the Christchurch Girls’ High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora, with Acland House continuing in this use to the current day. In 1994 the Crown sold the property to the Christchurch Girls’ High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora Board of Trustees.

Acland House provides accommodation for up to 130 students from outside Christchurch who attend Christchurch Girls’ High School | Te Kura o Hine Waiora.

Boarders have the opportunity for educational, cultural, sporting, and social development at the school and the hostel.

You will notice that the crest on their blazer pocket distinguishes them.

More information about Acland House can be found on our school website. Acland House does not accept casual boarders.
