CGHS Wins The SI Sevens!

Craig Thornhill, TiC Rugby —

The CGHS Sevens team has won the South Island Secondary Schools title for the 3rd time.

CGHS took two teams to this tournament - our 'development' team played enthusiastically and the tournament was an excellent learning experience for them.

Our 'A' team, as National Champions, were favoured to win the South Island title again but the first few pool games showed our lack of game time as skills were a little rusty! The girls got better and better over the day and after beating Otago Girls' High in the semi-final, we faced James Hargest College in the final.

By this time, our team was depleted; due to injuries and make-up appointments (the CBHS Formal was on that night), we were missing five senior girls from the team! Hargest started well and scored first, but our girls soon matched them and played some excellent Sevens rugby, scoring 45 unanswered points. Final score was 45-5. Standout performances in the final came from Holly Wratt-Groeneweg, Salome Naikau and Kelera Qalivutu

Our players now turn their sights to winning the Canterbury Secondary Schools Tournament and then returning to defend our National title at the Condor Sevens.
