Lifesaving Skills

Michelle Pinkney —

Each year we make a concerted effort to train in the basic elements of lifesaving and water skills because of our concerns about water safety among New Zealanders.

Year 9 students are encouraged to sign up on OnStream to train for the Bronze Star Award, a basic introduction to lifesaving skills.

Students of other year levels, who have not undertaken any Lifesaving training, are also welcome to begin sessions and should contact Mrs Pinkney for more information.

Students who have previously gained Lifesaving Awards are encouraged to sign up for the next level of Award.

It is important, however, that parents and students are aware of the following requirements for participation in Lifesaving training:

  • That students can swim 100 metres in under 10 minutes by their examination session.
  • That practice sessions are required in the evenings prior to students sitting their examination and students will need for pay pool entry fees for practice sessions.
  • That there are charges for their examination - $20.00.

Training sessions at Jellie Park are organised by senior students who are Lifesaving Instructors, beginning towards the end of Term 1.

Lifesaving examination takes place in Term 2, on 15th May. Students can select a group to practice with, whose session times are convenient.

Cost: $20 (plus pool entry for training sessions)
