Scholarship success

Adrienne Huia —

Recently two of our students were awarded scholarships in recognition of their hard work and dedication to their various pursuits.

Ngarita MacKenzie of Year 12 was awarded the ‘Te Ara a Kupe Beaton’ scholarship. These Scholarships encourage young Māori representation on the global stage and push for social equity. Each year, only five Te Ara a Kupe Beaton Scholarship recipients from throughout NZ, each receive $20,000 worth of funding to cover mentoring and education support services to assist them to achieve entry into the university of their dreams.

The winners were announced during an online ceremony hosted by Crimson Education, the education services company that established the scholarship awards. Ngarita has earned many academic successes during her time at Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora and she has made valuable contributions to various other kaupapa in the school, including the whānau committee.

Her most impressive achievements however, are her multiple national gold medals for kayaking. Congratulations to Ngarita for this outstanding accomplishment.

Bethany Crossan of Year 12 was awarded a Māori Education Trust Foundation scholarship. This scholarship is called the ‘RJ Graham Scholarship’ and is awarded to a small number of high achieving Māori students, selected from across New Zealand.

Recipients must have proven academic merit and contribute actively to the life of their kura. This scholarship provides a sum of money to contribute to Bethany’s education costs and is a very deserved recognition of her wonderful leadership and academic achievements, which include; academic colors for NCEA Level 1, leading the school kapa haka, leading the whānau committee and serving on numerous other committees in the school.

We appreciate Bethany’s service, initiative and congratulate her for this wonderful achievement.
