Eva Watson —

The 2017-2018 rowing season was a great success for the CGHS team. We were very fortunate all season with our weather conditions which meant we were able to compete strongly at Lake Ruataniwha throughout the season.

Although we had reduced numbers for the Under 18 age group, good performances from the other age groups in our squad did well to fill the void, showing great results from our first regatta gaining two 1st three 2nds and two 3rds at the Otago Champs.

The squad continued to train and work hard at every training including training camps, to prove that Christchurch Girls' High School was the rowing school to beat. We competed at several regattas over the season improving our results at every competition.

By early March we departed for Twizel to compete at the South Island Secondary Schools Regatta, our last and biggest regatta before the Maadi cup. On the Sunday we had 13 A final races (top 8 in the South Island) and we finished the regatta with 4 podium finishes, this gave us a lot of confidence and excitement for the upcoming weeks.

We travelled down South to Lake Ruataniwha extremely excited and thrilled to put the other schools to the test at Maadi cup, one of the biggest secondary school events in the Southern Hemisphere.

We were extremely privileged to have our own Christchurch Girls' High School accommodation located at the lake which was extremely convenient for the week ahead. It was a very busy week with tight race times and tough competition, however all of our hard work paid off with a rewarding Bronze in the U16 4 which included Bridget Morris, Sophie Radcliffe, Sophie Bowden, Eva Watson and Julia Coppens (c) and a silver in the u15 4 which included Bridget Morris, Sophie Radcliffe, Emily Bowden, Luci Crawford and Emily Brown (c). The squad competed extremely well all week showing many CGHS qualities including resilience and grit.
