Show Choir 2019
Show Choir is the ideal choir for any student who enjoys to sing and perform, particularly those who have a love for showtunes.
Made up of students from across all year levels, we meet every Monday for an after school rehearsal led by our co-directors, Miss Morrison and Miss Tinworth.
2019 marked the beginning of Christchurch Girls High School’s Show Choir, following a rebranding from Pops Choir at the end of 2018. Throughout the year we have learnt a large repertoire, from hits such as What is this Feeling? from the sixth-longest running Broadway musical Wicked to songs from popular movies such as Double Double as performed in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban which has text adapted from Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
A key change made to the choir through the rebranding was the addition of choreography and the decision to perform out of school uniform as we chose to perform in costume. The numbers were choreographed and staged mainly by students, with some input from our talented directors.
As the Show Choir Leader for 2019, it has been amazing for me to watch every member of the choir grow as singers, performers, and people. Our sound both as a choir, and as individuals, has developed under the direction of Miss Morrison and Miss Tinworth who have helped us to better our vocals. We have had the opportunity to build friendships with other students not limited to our own year groups, but across all year levels. Not only this, but as members of Show Choir, students have the opportunity to show school spirit, representing the school in competitions and performing for the school.
In September 2019 we entered into the Christchurch Voices Festival, an annual contemporary choir festival where we were awarded two awards: best choreography and outstanding character in performance. The festival was an amazing experience for the members of the choir, with the chance to perform in a low-pressure environment where fellow students could share their passion for music. Throughout the year, Show Choir performed in school music and cultural concerts where we were able to share our passion with friends, family and the wider school community.
While this is my final year, I am very excited to see Show Choir grow in the future and continue to build on what we had the chance to create this year. Let’s see what next year brings for Show Choir!
