Rugby

Stella Hawes —

Rugby at Christchurch Girls' High School is a growing sport and this year the 1st XV had a number of successes.

In 2018 we fielded a 1st XV, the only single school team in the competition, and also had enough keen girls for the development team that joined with Darfield High School. It was awesome having so many girls wanting to join and give rugby a go.

We didn’t get to play the annual College Day Tournament due to rain, so the girls headed straight into the UC Cup with a few trainings under their belt but with no real game experience. It was another successful season. The 1st XV won the UC Cup final (after going through the season with only one loss) for the 4th year in a row. The team also represented the Crusaders region playing in Oamaru against Southland Girls' for the South Island title. Although the team held Southland out for majority of the first half Southland come away with the win, making the team the second best in the South Island (which is a great achievement in itself).

There are four girls playing for the Canterbury School Girls’ Team and many who tried out and made the Canterbury development team: this is a proud achievement for Girls' High rugby as most of our 1st XV was selected to trial. One of the reasons for our success is due to our coaches Jamie Livingstone and Anna McCone; they took time out of their day every Monday and Wednesday to coach us and we really appreciate their knowledge and commitment that taught us the skills to win our games.

As well as our amazing coaches, the girls’ dedication and determination to do well as a team and as individuals is what makes us so successful. Having every girl show up to training and work hard is what makes us the unique and worthy team we are. Good job everyone.
