NCEA Update – September 2019

Sonja Bailey, Assistant Principal —

With the upcoming school examinations, it is timely to remind your daughter of their importance.

These examinations cause the basis for school derived grades in case something happens at the end of the year. These grades come into play if your daughter is sick, suffers a ‘personal trauma’ or other possible significant events that might impair their examination performance such as earthquakes. In 2018, we had over 50 students who applied for these grades for a number of reasons, such as ‘I fell off a skateboard and broke my arm’, Tonsillitis, Death of a Grandparent, Gastroenteritis etc.

Digital Examinations

This year a number of subjects have opted to have digital examinations available.

  • Level 3 Business
  • Classics
  • Level 2 English (students choose – optional)
  • History
  • Art History

If your daughter is sitting a digital examination, they are able to bring in their own laptop and use this. It must be capable of holding a charge for 3 hours as power cords are not allowed in the exam. If you think this might be an issue, you may want to look at a ‘power box’, often used for charging phones, as a back up option as these are allowed to be used and can be stored in their emergency pack.

Students have chosen to sit a digital examination are able to switch back to paper even on the day of the exam, so if issues arise with their device before the exam this will not be an issue for them.

Examination Timetable:

Students will soon be given their individualized timetable as part of their admission slip. The full timetable can be accessed HERE in the meantime for end of year planning.

To help your daughter through any possible stress and anxiety during the school and external examinations the following ideas are a few suggestions to help alleviate issues:

  • Be clear on the date and time of each examination. Make sure that they arrive with plenty of time before the examination starts.
  • All equipment should be in a clear plastic bag. This can be packed and sorted the night before. A number of examinations may require a calculator and checking that they are included is important.
