Promising Performances at the Junior Netball Champs

Emma Hartnell, Netball Sports Leader —

In the first week of the holidays the Year 9A and 10A CGHS Netball teams competed in the South Island Junior Championships at the Hagley Netball Courts.

Both teams showed promise from the beginning of the tournament, finishing top during pool play and going through the tournament unbeaten, before coming up short in the finals.

The Year 9 team beat Gore’s St Peter’s College, Dunedin’s Columba College and Darfield High School in pool play to solidify a position in the top 16. CGHS then defeated Ashburton College and Rangiora High School to progress to the final stages. A tense quarter-final against Mt Aspiring College tested the strength of CGHS’s young athletes, however, they held on to win 24-21, proceeding to the semi-finals where they outlasted Nelson College for Girls 29-25. However, they were no match for a strong St Hilda’s team coming up short 45-21, in the final.

The more experienced Year 10 team had a similar path to their final. In the round-robin section, they convincingly beat Rangiora High School, Roncalli College from Timaru and Central Southland. They moved through to the top 16 section having further success against Wakatipu and Marlborough Girls’ College to solidify a place in the finals. In the quarter finals, they won by 7 against St Hilda’s before convincingly beating Nelson’s Waimea College in the semi-final 42-27. However, Taieri won the final 38-29.

CGHS’s junior netball teams’ efforts during the tournament displayed the future potential and promising talent that players have to offer in upcoming years.
