Learning Enhancement Testing At Year 9

Cecelia Jardine-King —

In Learning Enhancement we do a range of testing.

All Year 9 students do the South Australian Spelling Test and in the coming weeks they will do a 20 minute handwriting test. These are tests that can be used when we apply to NZQA for Special Assessment Conditions for students in Years 11-13.

The South Australian Spelling Test has 70 words which get progressively harder and it gives an average spelling age. For students who have or are newly learning English, it gives an idea of their English vocabulary and spelling level.

The 20 minute handwriting test is to show how many words per minute students can write. The average handwriting speed for a Year 9 student is 15.7 words per minute. For Year 10 it is 16.3 words per minute. The handwriting test may also highlight issues with legibility, spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Both of these tests give us a good snapshot of our Year 9 cohort and highlight any students who we may need to investigate further. They are used nationwide and accepted by NZQA as evidence that a student may have a barrier to learning and needs support around assessments and examinations.
