Garden Club

Lea Passchier and Jennie Meuldijk —

It is always a great way to end the week in the school gardens. Each Friday lunchtime when the weather behaves, a dedicated group of students come together to plant, nurture, and dig up fresh produce.

During our time at Girls’ High, Garden Club has always been open and welcoming. Mrs Wilson, who leads the group, is always there with a cheerful smile and generous knowledge. Groundsman Dave Schimanski is always lending his irreplaceable assistance and does much to keept the Club lively.

We have had a great year in Garden Club, managing to grow three varieties of kale, beans, spinach, silver beet, and much more! There are always stray potatoes in the mix, regardless of whether we planted them. On the weeks where there is nothing to collect or dig up, we relax and talk with one another, whilst getting some weeding done and tidying up the garden patches. Garden Club is a nice way to chill out and socialise while also getting closer to nature.

Mrs Wilson is always coming up with new ideas of what to plant, and the other students are such a pleasure to be around. When the time comes to harvest our goods, we set off in pairs and sell to teachers around the school. They are always more than happy to accept fresh veggies. There’s nothing better than a grocery store that comes to you!

This year we also planted tulips with Mr Schimanski, just in time forspring bloom. The tulips did wonders brightening up the school grounds, especially by the river where numerous students sit for lunch. Garden Club wouldn’t been the same without Mrs Wilson, Mr Schimanski, or the committed students that are always eager to join in on the fun. We owe all of you our thanks for such a joyous five years and are confident to leave the Club in the best hands.
