Eco Action Nursery Trust Tree Planting

Jason Aaron, HoD Science —

Last Sunday the Eco Action Nursery Trust group helped to plant native trees in the Red Zone near QEII. The morning saw 1100 trees planted by around 200 volunteers, with CGHS contributing around 20 volunteers to proceedings.

Trees planted included makomako (Wineberry or Aristotelia serrata), kanuka (Kunzea ericoides) and totora (Podocarpus totora) with the aim of providing a flight corridor from the Port Hills into the Red Zone for native birds to provide food and habitat for the future. The aim of the Trust is to carry on planting areas of the Red Zone and eventually reconnect Pūtaringamotu / Riccarton Bush with the Port Hills via this corridor stretching up the Otakaro / Avon River.

The Eco Action Nursery Trust desperately needs more large buckets to help water the new trees when they are planted. If anyone in our parent community has access to large plastic paint or plaster buckets that can be washed and reused please contact Jason Aaron (aaj@cghs.school.nz) as we would love to have them for future planting days. The next planting day is scheduled for 26th July, on Chimera Crescent near QEII.
