Cycling Updates from Christchurch City Council

CCC —

Be bright, be seen - We’re approaching the shortest day of the year, with dark and cool mornings and evenings, but with the right gear, it’s still a great time to ride a bike.

Riding between dusk and dawn, or in low light conditions, you’ll need a white light on the front and a red light on the back of your bike. These must be visible from 200m and it’s a good idea to angle them down a little so they don’t dazzle other people.

Lights in flash mode are more noticeable, and use less battery. Investing in USB-chargeable lights is worthwhile to save cost and hassle in the long run. Wearing or carrying layers of clothing will do a better job of keeping you warm/cool than just one thick layer. Wearing something bright or colourful helps others to see you; reflective strips on your clothes or bags make you even more visible.

Heathcote Express cycleway disruption - Orion have started works installing a new underground power cable along MacKenzie Avenue, between Ensors Road and Hopkins Street, as part of their Bromley to Milton new power cable route. Cyclists can still use MacKenzie Ave, but will need to dismount where the road is closed and walk along the footpath before rejoining the cycleway. Works are expected to take place between May and August 2023.

World Bike Day is around the corner - Get ready to celebrate World Bicycle Day on Saturday 3 June! This day recognizes the versatility and uniqueness of the bicycle, as well as its reliability and sustainability as a mode of transportation. Some activities you could take part in include planning an epic bike trip through the various terrain we have in Ōtautahi-Christchurch, acknowledging the worldwide celebration or simply spreading the word.

The Big Bike Film Night is back! - The Big Bike Film Night is returning to Ōtautahi-Christchurch. The team behind this popular event are on a mission - bringing the best cycling short films from around the world together for you. Screening will take place Friday 26 May at St Margaret's College. The first Christchurch show has sold out, so be sure to secure your tickets to the second screening so you don't miss out.

Remember; when it comes to bike theft, prevention is better than cure, so be sure to invest in a secure lock and lock through the frame, not just the wheel.
