CGHS Senior A Basketball Team

Violet Eaton —

During tournament week, the CGHS Senior A Basketball team travelled all the way down to Invercargill to compete in the Secondary School Schick Premierships.

Winning our first two pool games against Timaru (66-60) and Kaiapoi (61-44), we then met Rangi Ruru to compete for the top of our pool. Unfortunately, after a hard fought match we lost (38-64) but still managed to finish second in our pool.

After these games, we then faced Waimea and had a convincing win (61-43) which qualified us for Nationals and meant we had made the semi-finals! In the semis, we played St Andrews (winners of the tournament) but due to many injuries over the tournament, we only had 6 healthy players for this and the last couple games, which was very tough on the team. We played very well considering the number of players we had, but sadly lost (30-73). The score didn’t reflect the quality of our play at all.

Losing this game meant we were then playing off for 3rd and 4th against Otago Girls and lost (60-80). Overall we were very happy to take 4th out of the 17 teams competing during the week, and are very excited to be competing at Nationals in Palmerston North in the first week of the holidays.
