National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships

Lili Ovendale —

Last weekend in Timaru, we had a strong team of 10 runners represent our school at the National Secondary Schools’ Cross Country Championships.

The course and the competition challenged the girls, pushing them to their limits, however we still managed to achieve some spectacular results. Some stand-out performances were from Pippa Baker who placed 19th in the Year 9 Girls race. Madeline Sharpe and Emma Parke, placed 8th and 29th respectively in the Junior Girls 3km race, and Rosie Trotter placed 28th in the Senior Girls 4km race.

Eight of our girls represented Canterbury in the regional relay competition which took place on Sunday against other provinces around the country. A few girls were among teams which finished in the top 5 in their age group. Pippa Baker ran anchor in the Year 9 Girls Canterbury A team to finish 2nd. Madeline Sharpe ran the second 2km leg, and Emma Parke the 3rd lap for the Junior Canterbury A team who finished 4th, and both Ella McDonald and Rosie Trotter ran as part of the Senior Canterbury A team who also finished 4th in their category.

Overall, it was a very successful weekend for the girls who are now looking forward to the build up to an equally successful athletics season!
