Pops Choir

Jay Hudson —

Pops Choir is a fun, relaxed group made up of students from all year levels who all share a passion for singing. We are a non-auditioned choir who meet every Monday and Friday lunchtimes for rehearsals, which are led by our conductor Miss Morrison.

Anyone is able to join who enjoys to sing, and wants to be in choir with like-minded students. We have learnt, and performed arrangements of songs from many different genres, from Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water to gospel to a medley of songs from the hit musical Les Miserables.

Throughout the year, Miss Morrison has helped us to better our vocals, teaching us techniques in how to better our sound. The chance given to us all to sing without pressure has helped to develop our sound, both individually and as a choir. In addition, Pops Choir gives students the opportunity to meet and develop friendships with other students, those in our year and in years below and above us. Not only this, but as members of Pops Choir, students have the opportunity to show school spirit, representing the school in competitions and performing for the school.

In August of 2018, we entered into the Christchurch Voices Festival, an annual contemporary choir festival, winning an award for Outstanding Use of Gospel Music. At the end of this event, we were able to participate in a massed choir item of Don’t Stop Me Now by Queen with the other performing choirs of the night. In addition, we also performed at the winter music concert for our schools music department. As a choir, our style and technique has developed over the year, with all of us looking forward to what next year will bring.
