International Women’s Day Breakfast

Charlotte Knight & Violet Eaton —

Today (8th of March) is International Women's Day (IWD). For 2019, the theme is “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”.

The organisation 'UN Women' hosts annual events on this day to celebrate the advances of gender equality for women that have been achieved in the past year and look forward to future plans. Although this is a day celebrated worldwide, the members of UN Women from Christchurch hosted the annual IWD Breakfast at the Elms Hotel early this morning. Alongside Mrs Peawini, students Violet Eaton and Charlotte Knight had the opportunity to attend this breakfast, with Freya Champion attending alongside Labour MP Dr Duncan Webb.

We were lucky enough to hear from guest speaker Rachel Froggatt, CEO of Women In Sport Aotearoa who spoke of her experiences and successes in her life. She has led multiple programmes across many sports, including Paralympics, Formula 1 and various motorsports, football and cricket. Hearing about her life story and passion for sport inspired the both of us with our own sporting endeavours. We were also exposed to some shocking statistics and anecdotes she had to share about the inequality against women in sport she had experienced first-hand, which will influence us as young sportswomen. Our views on the rights we deserve not only on the sporting field but as females in general has definitely changed for the better, where the aim of empowerment within women will not be forgotten. We are extremely grateful to have been able to attend this breakfast and represent the growing women at Christchurch Girls’ High and the wider community.
