Year 12 Pay it Forward to Women's Refuge

Sandy Otway —

After completing the Loves Me Not Seminar in term 3 our year 12 students decided to collect items and donate them to Battered Women's Refuge in Shirley.

Staff and students brought in 'previously loved and surplus to requirement' handbags, purses and sponge bags from home. They were also asked to donate toiletries that could be placed in the handbags (deodorant, moisturizer, lip gloss, sanitary products, soap, toothbrushes, etc) that a woman who was forced to leave her home suddenly, would need but may not have had time to pack. A group of our students who we called 'The Bag Ladies' tidied up the handbags and then filled them with the donated items. This week Alec Wesley and Nina Tudehope delivered them to the Battered Women's Refuge in Shirley. They will be given to women when they are placed in their new accommodation. The staff of the centre said that this act of kindness will be very appreciated by the women. At such a time of upheaval knowing that others care for their safety is important and CGHS year 12 can be very proud of their generosity.
