Visit to Rehua Marae

Adrienne Huia —

On the first day of Term 2 our Year 11 Te Reo Māori class spent a wonderful and enriching day at Rehua Marae with students from six different schools.

The purpose of the Marae visit was to learn about the Marae, Tikanga on the marae and participate in workshops, that focused specifically on language related to assessment for Te Reo Māori at NCEA level 1.

There were more than 100 students in total from Year 11 classes at Linwood College, Christchurch Boys’ High School, Rolleston College, Ellesmere College, Catholic Cathedral College and Christchurch Girls’ High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora. The day started with a Pōwhiri and ended on the Mahau of the meeting house with a group photo. Our students valued, in particular learning about the role of women on the marae. They also enjoyed making connections with other students from across the city and the opportunity to learn from a range of different teachers.
