Volleyball - On A Roll

Mr Bilsbury —

The popularity of volleyball is booming among secondary school students, with playing numbers growing exponentially over the past few years. Volleyball is now one of the most popular sports in the country.

Nationally, girls continue to flock to volleyball with the sport now having the second highest participation rate among young women. This is exactly the case at Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora and combined with the high levels of participation we are also experiencing high levels of success.

Mr B and Mr N rate this as one of the best Volleyball trips they have been on…..

From November 21 to 25, the Junior Volleyball teams travelled to sunny Nelson to compete in the South Island Junior Volleyball Championships.

This year we took both the Year 9 and Year 10 A teams.  After finishing as runners up in the Canterbury Championships, the Year 10A team were considered strong contenders to make a semi-final in this tournament, however there were a large number of strong teams to get past first. After 3 hard days of play, the team advanced to the Semi-finals and into a re-match of the Canterbury final against the Cashmere. This time the tables were turned as our Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora team swept passed Cashmere with a fantastic display of power Volleyball and moved into the gold medal match against Nayland.

The final was a gripping affair. We dominated the first set quickly reaching the target of 25 points to take it. Nayland hit right back, taking the second set with a significant step up in their intensity and play. The deciding set was a see-saw battle. Half way through we had the ascendency and it was looking possible that we might finish the job, but Nayland pushed on, taking a lead and taking them to the crown of South Island Champions. Our wonderful year 10A team were Silver Medalists in the South Island Junior Volleyball Championships, but more importantly succeeded in their mission of giving 100%, supporting one another unconditionally and being fantastic team-mates.

At the Canterbury Junior Championships 3 players were named in the tournament team: Stella Crossan, Amelie Martin and Khonnah Vanilau. Khonnah was also named MVP of the tournament.

At the South Island Junior Championships 3 players were named in the tournament team: Poppie Busch-Ward, Mischa Laulala and Khonnah Vanilau.

In 2022 our Senior Teams have achieved the following results:

Senior A placed 3rd in the South Island senior championships, won the South Island Satellite Championships and are ranked 2nd in the Canterbury premier league.

Senior B team remains the highest ranked ‘B’ Team in Canterbury.

A Special mention!

A core group of senior players are about to draw the curtain on their Volleyball careers here at Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora. These exceptional young women have added so much to our programmes on and off the court. Their commitment, positivity and character could never be questioned. Since starting in year 9 these superstars have trained for 1000’s of hours and played over 150 games across 5 seasons.

Scarlett Rutherford Prince, Millie Hassall and Molly Newman. I have been amazed and inspired by what you have achieved over the years. It’s been a pleasure and an honour.
