German - Year 10

CGHS —

The teacher in charge of this course is Mrs Smith.

Year 10 German uses the on-line Stimmt 2 textbook and accompanying work book with a variety of other resources, including Education Perfect and the exciting Klar interactive computer resource. Ākonga continue to develop their competence in the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing. German is the most widely spoken language in Europe. It's no wonder since Germany's 83 million inhabitants make it the most populous European nation. But not only the residents of Germany speak German. It is also an official language of Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein. It is the native language of a significant portion of the population in northern Italy, eastern Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, eastern France, parts of Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia and Romania, as well as in other parts of Europe.

We aim to teach ākonga:

  • to understand and communicate with German speakers
  • to speak and write precisely
  • to think laterally
  • to overcome difficulties
  • to adopt a disciplined approach to learning
  • to meet intellectual challenges.

The study of German also develops qualities of tolerance and cultural sensitivity while enabling students to appreciate more fully their own cultural identity and their own language.

Some of the topics covered in Year 10 are:

  • travel and transport
  • holidays
  • eating and shopping
  • staying with a German family
  • health
  • going out.

We have a German Tour planned in 2025. This is exciting as Covid put a stop to overseas trips, but finally we are able to start these up again. Here students will be able to visit Germany, Austria, Switzerland and a few days in Paris.
