Year 13 Tourism

Year 13 Tourism —

2020 was a very interesting year to be learning about tourism. The impacts of Covid 19 were felt all around the world with the tourism industry having to react and adapt to massive change.

Tourism businesses and the government have had to work hard to adapt to these changes and New Zealander’s have been encouraged to get out and see more of our own country with campaigns such as “Do something New, New Zealand”.

Part of the Tourism course at Christchurch Girls involves students getting out and experiencing the local tourism industry which was obviously made more challenging this year with lockdowns, business closures and hotels being used for quarantine. Fortunately, we were able to get out on two trips. The first at the start of the year to Jucy Snooze which is a very popular backpacker/hostel style of accommodation near the airport. Students were able to have a look at the facilities and check out the different styles of accommodation on offer.

In November, students were able to visit the Antarctic Centre which had recently reopened and it was interesting to learn about how this business had been impacted and how they were adapting.

Students also got to experience all the fun activities on offer such as Huskies, Hagglunds and the 4D movie experience.
