Rugby Sevens

Jessie Robertson —

"Last week, the rugby sevens squad traveled to Mount Maunganui for Condor Sevens, the national secondary schools tournament.

The Year 9 and 10 team competed on Thursday and Friday in challenging conditions, starting with two impressive wins against Cambridge High School and Cullinane College in the 28 degree heat. Their final pool game was a tough loss to Rotorua Girls' High School, who went on to win the tournament. Captain Anna Croft managed to score the only try against the side on Thursday. These results secured the team a spot in the top eight cup finals. Friday brought another day of high temperatures and three challenging games. The girls showed grit and determination, consistently working together and supporting each other as a team. They placed 6th in New Zealand - a massive achievement for such a young team, who are already excited for what next year's sevens has to offer.

The senior tournament continued into the weekend, with competition from North Island schools proving much fiercer and more physical than that in the South. On Saturday, the girls played three games against Feilding, Waikato Diocesan and Pukekohe High School in the rain, narrowly missing out on a spot in the top eight. The final two games were played on Sunday, and the team finished 11th in New Zealand. Year 13 players Sophie Yarham and Riko Yoshida scored the final two tries — a special way to end both the tournament and their time as players for Christchurch Girls’.

A big thank you to Condors, who do an amazing job organising an exceptional event, all whānau who came to support the girls and Ellesmere Transport, High School Old Boys RFC and Ray Mayne Hose & Fittings Ltd for our singlet sponsorship."
