Hockey Win Federation Cup

CGHS Publication —

During tournament week, the Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora 1st XI Hockey team travelled to Napier to compete at Federation Cup, the highest level secondary school girls national competition, which is attended by 32 teams each year.

The team was relatively successful during the pool games, coming away with 2 wins (5-1 vs Iona and 6-0 vs Columba) and a loss against local rivals Villa Maria (0-2). These results put us to the top of our pool, facing St Matthews in our octo-final. The team put out a very solid performance in this game coming away with a 5-1 win, putting us through to the quarter-final, where we faced Westlake Girls.

Both teams put up a great fight in this game, however, Lexie Rouse managed to find the back of the net in the 50th minute to secure the 1-0 win for us.

On the Friday, we came up against Wairarapa College in our semi-final. Despite the 21°C heat, the girls gave it everything and came away with a 2-0 win, which sent us into the grand final where we were up against St Margaret’s College, who we went down to earlier in the year in the local final in a tight battle ending 2-3. This gave the team some extra motivation heading into Saturday, which showed on the field as every player put in the hard yards until the final whistle. During the game, we managed to find ourselves on the scoresheet first, with a goal nicely finished by Lexie Rouse again, however, SMC responded to equalise the game, with the score after 60 minutes all tied up at 1-1, forcing a shootout. With shootout expert, Claudia Rowse, in goal and our 5 shootout takers, Eve Swan, Millie White, Harriet Caseley, Pip Baker and Ruby Pedersen, we were able to lock in a 3-1 win, making us national champions, and making history for Christchurch Girls' High School / Te Kura o Hine Waiora Hockey, who have never won Federation Cup prior to 2022!

A big thanks to our management team, Chris Leslie (Coach), Andrew Hastie (Coach), Jackie White (Manager), Emily Rowse (Assistant Manager) and Bevan Lawson (Physiotherapist) for all of the effort they have put into the team over the season and during tournament week. They played a massive part in our teams success and we couldn’t have done it without them!
