Winter Sport Update

Robin Brown, Head of Sport —

The first week of Wednesday Winter Sport saw some great results from our teams.

Our two football teams both had wins – the 1st XI an exciting 2 -1 victory over Papanui High School; the 2nd XI won against Avonside Girls’ 12 – 0!

The 1st XV rugby team also had a huge win – officially 55 – 0 over the Wildcats team which was a combination of schools. Our team has been training hard over the last few months and this has obviously paid off; one of our new year 9 players scored the first try!

Twenty netball teams took to the courts on Wednesday with lots of wins among them. The senior A team had the opportunity to play in the curtain raiser for the Tactix versus Steel game at Horncastle Arena. They played some great netball against Rangiora High School. The game started very evenly but then our team pulled ahead in the last three quarters to take out the win 39 – 20. An encouraging start to the Supernet competition and a great experience for the team.

Cycling also began on Wednesday. CGHS had 14 riders among the 240 riders from Christchurch schools taking part in the initial time trial on Old Tai Tapu Road.

This winter sixteen badminton teams are entered in the Wednesday competition. Our A team won against Rangi A which was a great start for them.

Our two squash teams are playing in the mixed grade on Wednesdays. This week they both played boys teams, which is challenging, but it was great to see 2 of our players won their games.

On Tuesday evening our senior A basketball team hosted their first home game of the Whelan Trophy competition. They played Avonside Girls’ in quite a closely fought game; CGHS came out the winners with a 9-point margin.

This season CGHS has a record eight teams playing hockey in the CHA competition. All teams paly on Wednesdays apart from the 1st XI. They play in the Connetics SSP girls’ competition on Friday nights. The team won their first game 3 – 1 last Friday night at Nga Puna Wai against Burnside High School.

We look forward to seeing the progress of our winter athletes over the next two terms.
