Tennis 2019

Lauren Young and Alice Ridgen —

This has been a good year for tennis at CGHS, with a large number of girls participating in both Term 1 and Term 4. In Term 1, 16 teams played in the Wednesday inter-school competition; a mix of both senior and junior teams. The girls played either socially or competitively, and either way demonstrated a positive representation for Girl's High. In Term 4, with a shorter season before school holidays, we have had 12 teams playing in the Wednesday competition. The Senior A and B team did well this year, and the competition was once again very strong with our team going up against top teams including Rangi Ruru, St Andrew’s and St Margaret’s.

At the beginning of the year, 11 players represented CGHS at the Senior Canterbury Champs, with a range of pleasing results.

Junior Tennis at Girls High has been very successful this year as well. It was great to see many year 9 and 10 students competing in the Junior Canterbury champs in November, where Natalie Hetherington won the Girls' Singles Canterbury Champs for the Year 10 age group and also won the Canterbury Champs Doubles with Emma Tanner for the Year 10 age group. It was great to see the participation and involvement of younger students who wanted to give it a go, with training occurring in Term 1 run by senior students for juniors to help them continue to develop their skills and understanding of the game.

On behalf of the team and the sport tennis at Girls’ High, we would like to thank Mrs Brown for organising and supporting the senior A and B tennis team and tennis in general this year.

Together as head of Tennis this year we are both extremely proud of all of the teams that have either competed socially or competitively. We look forward to some great tennis at Girls’ High in 2020.
