Drama Trip To The Court Theatre

Florencia Flores, Arts & Cultural Prefect —

On Tuesday 10th March, senior drama students were given the opportunity to go to the Court Theatre and watch the wonderful performance 'A StreetCar Named Desire' directed by Melanie Luckman.

'A StreetCar Named Desire' is a play written by Tennessee Williams that opened on Broadway in 1947 and is considered to be one of the best and most critically successful plays of the 20th century. It still ranks among the most performed plays, and has inspired many adaptations in other forms.

The play dramatises the life and experiences of the Southern belle Blanche DuBois, played incredibly by Katharine Powell, as she seeks refuge with her younger sister in New Orleans in a desperate state. The Court Theatre took on the classic storyline in a way that still resonated with the audience in this day and age, with a group of very strong actors that produced an incredibly raw, and captivating performance!

The play was of relevance to the Year 13 drama students as we are currently studying and performing ‘The Glass Menagerie’ another extremely prominent play by Tennessee Williams written in same time era. We were able to easily identify similarities in the style of performance, and the ways the characters expressed themselves - especially the main figures who are Southern women wanting to hold on to their disillusioned pasts for a sense of security. We all thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and know it will be extremely useful in inspiring and helping us with our first internal!
