Otago Mathematics Competition 2023

Julie Olson —

The Annual Otago Mathematics Competition attracted over 4,800 students from 117 schools across NZ in 2023.

The competition, which is open to students in Years 9 to 11, is designed to test students' mathematical problem-solving skills and their ability to communicate their solutions clearly.

This year's competition was particularly challenging, with students facing a variety of problems that required them to think critically and creatively. However, the students rose to the challenge, and many of them submitted outstanding solutions.

In the end, Aubrey Esser, Mai Nguyen, Harriet Rouch, and Lily Rumble in Year 9, and Jaime Moffitt and Medha Baadkar in Year 10, were awarded Merit awards for placing in the top 50% of all competitors. These students are all gifted mathematicians with bright futures ahead of them.

The competition organizers were impressed by the high level of talent on display. They are also grateful to the schools and teachers who supported their students in participating in the competition.

The Otago Mathematics Competition is a valuable opportunity for students to test their skills and to complete questions under time pressure. It is also a great way to celebrate the love of mathematics and to encourage young people to pursue careers in STEM fields.

Well done to all the participants!
