Food and Nutrition - Level 1

Qualification: NCEA Level 1

Entry requirements: None.

Content/Skills: During the course of the year students will learn about kaitiakitanga and food safety, how food contributes holistically to wellbeing and personal, interpersonal and societal influences on food choices. 

Food contexts include whanau meals, adolescent nutrition and food labelling.  Students participate in practical activities to develop their culinary skills. 

Field Trips: None.

Course Costs: Please be aware that this course has a 'take home' component. By selecting this course you are agreeing to meet full costs for ingredients that are required. These costs are $170.00 which covers the cost of all ingredients for practical lessons.

Assessment:

2 Internal Achievement Standards worth 10 credits
1 External Achievement Standard worth 5 credits

Where does it lead? Culinary Studies at Level 2 and Level 3. Career pathways include Health Promotion, Food Marketing, Teaching, Public Health, Dietitian, Nutritionist in various areas such as sports nutrition, food companies, private practice. Careers in health science, catering and hospitality.
