Former Student Fighting Period Poverty

CGHS Publication —

Charlotte Hawkins (Year 13 2017) is part of a team of Canterbury University students fighting the country's period poverty crisis by donating sanitary products to Te Puna Oranga and Aviva Families and raising $1000 in the process.

Charlotte recently appeared with some of her classmates in a Herald article a couple of days ago. Click here to read the article.

They were inspired by a project in their 300-level Media and Communication course (Media and Social Change). As part of the project, the students analysed a New Zealand-made short film from Stuff's Someday Stories series named Super Special. When they saw the film about period poverty here in Aotearoa, they were upset to find it was a reality for so many young people. The group project made them really passionate and drove them to do something to combat the issue.
