Year 10 Camp - Student Perspective

Sophie Yarham —

This week I took part in the year 10 school camp. This camp was a lot of fun and had many challenges for all.

This experience gave us two different types of camping styles, lodging and the more traditional style, camping. I’m a person who loves the outdoors so camp was right up my alley, but there is always something special about going with your class.

My favourite part of camp was seeing my classmates (especially the ones who don’t like the outdoors) stepping out of their comfort zones and giving new things ago. When we all arrived at camp our classes combined and we competed against each other in a rogaine. This allowed us to explore our scenery and test our map and composs reading skills. This was a great way to start camp and settle into our new surroundings.

On camp we completed many different activities with the main three being cave stream, rock climbing and abseiling. Cave stream is a water based activity that involves adventure. We had to go through a cave of high, strong flowing water to get out the other side. This activity tested our teamwork as we had to help one another up the flowing water falls that were throughout the cave.

Rock climbing taught us how to trust our pairs and take leaps of faith. We were rock climbing on the rocks and boulders at castle hill. We climbed up three different rocks in a harness and rope with two of our classmates on the other end belaying so if we slipped we wouldn’t fall. For this activity we needed to be able to trust our classmates and have courage in our strength and ability. Abseiling was another one of our activities.

For abseiling we all went down the same rock that was at castle hill. This activity tested people’s fear of heights and others ability to balance. This activity involved us going backwards down a rock, one at a time. Throughout camp we also went on walks. The first day my group walked up Helicopter Hill. This walk took us to the top of a beautiful hill with a three sixty view of the mountains. We also walked from Mistletoe Flat to our lodge which took us through a nice valley with a split view of the mountains. Both these walks involved up and down hill and beautiful views. Overall camp was an amazing experience and one I will never forget!
