Second Place In The South Island Secondary Schools Hockey Championship

Lili Ovendale, 2nd XI Team Captain —

Last week the CGHS 2nd XI Hockey team travelled up to Nelson for tournament week to compete in one of a few secondary school championship events.

The team was put into a relatively hard pool and fought from the very beginning to draw with both Marlborough Girls’ and Nayland College 1st XI's and then come away with a win against Villa Maria 2nd XI to make the semi-finals. We then played a tough game against Nelson Girls' 1st XI which we won in penalty shootouts to make the final against Cashmere 1st XI. The final was very well fought, but unfortunately after a draw at full time (3-3), our girls were unlucky to lose 3-1 in the penalty shoot outs.

Although games were hard, the team grew much closer and kept a positive mindset throughout the week which was especially easy as we were staying together at the Saxton Lodge Motel. This meant many fun activities were had and recovery together was possible. We came away with not only silver medals, but also a stronger team bond for the rest of the season and many to come. We are very proud of our 2nd XI girls and hope to beat Cashmere in our game this Wednesday!
