Orchestra

This year the Christchurch Girls’ and Boys’ High School combined Orchestra has been working incredibly hard towards all the events and has performed extremely well throughout the year with all students performing with great enthusiasm and musicianship.

The orchestra consists of students from all year levels and different skill levels. Rehearsals are normally on Thursday after school until around 4.30pm in the auditorium room with our conductor Mr Langdon.

During the year, there were two CGHS music concerts that the orchestra performed in: One of them was in April and the other one was a Mid-Winter concert. In April we played Medieval Legend by Michael Story and Symphony No.5 Finale by Tchaikovsky. In August we played The Barber of Seville-Overture by Gioachino Rossini, Symphony No.5 Finale by Tchaikovsky and a little bit of Rachmaninoff’s piano concerto.

The performances at St Mary’s Catholic Church Concert and the 2018 Secondary Schools Orchestra Festival was very successful, we played The Barber of Seville-Overture and our favorite piece the third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. Special thanks to our talented pianist Jean Yu Lim who gave an impressive performance with the combined orchestra.

The orchestra festival was definitely the biggest event of the year for orchestra, we performed twice which one is to the judges and one for the gala night. All the students have worked very hard towards this and it was such a success for us. Specially for the orchestra leader Yuchen Luo who has received the outstanding leadership award in the festival. The orchestra has made impressive progress this year, everyone is very proud of what we have achieved to play as all the pieces we have performed were very hard especially the piano concerto with Jean.

A huge thank you to our conductor, Mr Langdon, for all the hard work and time he has put in this year, giving all of us the chance to play the most famous piano concerto in the world as well to all the students who have participated the Orchestra this year. We are looking forward to play this concerto again during the prize giving alongside with some other famous pieces and all the students will look forward to another exciting year in 2019.
