Canterbury Secondary Schools Tennis ChampionshipsL-R: Natalie Hetherington, Mya Williamson, Aki Gillespie, Molly McGusty by CGHS

Tennis

We have had another successful year of tennis at school attracting a lot of new players across the junior years as well as combining our best players to form Senior A and Senior B teams.

All these teams went on to compete in the Canterbury schools competition and they represented our school with the highest level of sportsmanship competing against other secondary schools. The most successful team in the Term 1 competition was our Year 9 Red team - Jessie Workman, Eve Swan, Madeleine Northern, Brodie Wilson, Scarlett Rutherford Prince and Freya Maguire. This team won the Year Division 1 competition.

In Term 1 the Canterbury Senior Championships were held at Wilding Park. In the Senior Singles competition Bailee Wilson won and Lauren Young was 2nd; these 2 players then combined to win the Senior Doubles. In the Year 11 grade Mya Williamson won the singles title and Molly McGusty was 3rd; Mya and Natalie Hetherington (a Year 9 player) won the doubles title with Aki Gillespie and Molly McGusty placing 2nd. Well done to all of the players who entered this event.

Tennis is a highly competitive sport especially at a secondary level and I am extremely proud of the girls who have competed at the highest level of tennis this year. They have continued to play their own game, to their highest ability, week in and week out during the season. It has been my pleasure to be the Head of Tennis for my final two years at CGHS and I know that the sport will continue to be popular and will allow many girls to excel in the sport they love, as well as be welcoming for any newcomers wanting to try something new.
