It was a colourful day with girls displaying house colours in an amazing array of imaginative costumes. The competitive athletes had some great races and events and demonstrated their talents in front of the school. The final part of the day, with various relays, also brought out the competitive spirit in many of our students. Jaidyn Busch set a new record in the senior shot put, throwing 13.27m. This year the Christchurch Girls’ High Athletics team has done outstandingly well winning a total of 51 medals split over Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championship (24 medals), South Island Secondary Schools’ Championship (15 medals) and National Secondary Schools’ Championships (12 medals). Over the 3 competitions our school athletes collected 25 gold medals.

CGHS was awarded the Top Girls’ School Trophy for the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships

South Islands Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships

The South Islands Secondary Schools’ Athletics was a phenomenal experience for the Christchurch Girl’s High team. With 6 golds, 2 silvers and 6 bronzes, the team came away with 15 medals out of 37 entries. As well, there were also 9 personal best made by our athletes. Jaidyn Busch broke the record in the under 19 Shot Put event, which was a highlight for her and the team. The trip was excitement packed, from tight races to hospital visits (luckily not a hospital stay). Our girls did exceptionally well in the relay’s, medalling in the under 15 and the under 19 4x100m relays, as well as the 4x400m relay. The team had a great weekend in Timaru and appreciated the support of Mrs Boyd and the parents who travelled with them.

These were amazing results at a National level. Well to all the girls! Thank you to Mrs Rüder, Mrs Carroll and the other parents who supported our team on the trip to Dunedin.

Over all this year has been an amazing success for the girls and I hope they carry on achieving at such an outstanding level in 2019.
