Volleyball

Volleyball has been a popular sport this year with a combination of competitive and social teams playing in Term 1 and Term 4 in the Monday night schools’ competition.

This year a new initiative was trialled with the Year 9 students, who wanted to learn skills, taking part in a skills and games in-house programme at school on Monday afternoons in Term 1. This gave them the skills and confidence necessary to play and resulted in 5 teams playing against other Christchurch schools in the Term 4 competition.

In Term 1 the Senior A Team was a strong contender and very competitive in the schools’ Monday competition; in the Canterbury Secondary Schools’ they came second, in the Mainland Championships they were third and at the Nationals they came twenty-second out of ninety-eight teams. The Senior B Team also attended Nationals where they gained very valuable experience.

The Junior A and Year 9 A Teams competed in the Canterbury Junior Championships in Term 4. The Year 9 A team then travelled to Dunedin to compete in the Junior South Island’s in late November. They had a great trip and their volleyball improved greatly from the tournament experience.

One of our CGHS players, Leilani Wilcox-Nanai, was selected for the New Zealand Junior Women’s Volleyball team and went on to compete at the Asian Women's Under 19 Volleyball Championships held in Thailand. Leilani started 3 out of 6 games that the team played at the Championships. She has only been playing volleyball for two school seasons and one club season so this was a fantastic experience and honour for her.

Thank you to Mr Bilsbury and Mr Sawyer for their coaching and administration of volleyball this year. As well, it was great to have the senior students assisting with coaching and refereeing in term 1 and 4. Volleyball is a popular and enjoyable sport and it will be great to see what 2019 brings for our players.
