ESOL Overview at CGHS
At Christchurch Girls' High School we have five ESOL-based classes.
Year 9 and 10 ESOL - The Year 9 and 10 follow a programme linked closely to the teaching of grammar, reading, writing and speaking. In 2019, we will link their programmes to aspects of Social Science, Science and English, learning skills, vocabulary and academic vocabulary.
Year 11ELL, 12ELL and 13ELL . These classes follow a programme with some grammar practice, and include credits towards NCEA. They take Achievement Standards in NCEA English and there is generally a good level of success for our ESOL students. The internal standards are in speaking, information literacy, personal reading, creating a visual text at Year 11 and 12. Year 13 will complete a speech and a connections report. Year 11 will complete one external standard on a written text, and Year 12 will complete one standard on a visual text. Year 13 will complete one external standard on a written text and one external standard on a visual text. Year 13 students will also study for IELTS, although this is formally assessed elsewhere.
Students use Google Docs for much of their work and assessments, so they will require a laptop or a tablet.
We employ Trish Dakers, an ESOL tutor, for 20 periods a week to assist students on a personal basis. Often, she sits and works together with the students in their other subject classes, such as Science and Maths. Trish is a qualified Science teacher and the girls highly value her help.
As well as NCEA ESOL English, in 2019 we are offering an NCEA ESOL Maths class to Year 11 and 12 students.
