ESOL Overview at CGHS

The ESOL classes at Christchurch Girls' are made up of International and Domestic students, who come from a range of countries, such as China, Japan, South Korea, The Philippines and Argentina.

At Christchurch Girls' High School we have three ESOL-based classes to assist Senior students gain credits towards NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3.

International Students in Year 9 and 10- These students follow a full immersion programme and are supported by individual ESOL tutors to ensure their needs are meet throughout the curriculum.

International Students in Years 11, 12 and 13 -

These students can opt to join one of our specialist English Classes 11ELL, 12ELL and 13ELL . These classes follow a programme with some grammar practice, and include credits towards NCEA. They  take Achievement Standards in NCEA English and there is generally a good level of success for our ESOL students. The internal standards are in speaking, information literacy, personal reading, creating a visual text at Year 11 and 12. Year 13 will complete a speech and a connections report. Year 11 will complete one external standard on a written text, and Year 12 will complete one standard on a visual text. Year 13 will complete one external standard on a written text and one external standard on a visual text. Year 13 students will also study for IELTS, although this is formally assessed elsewhere.

Students use Google Docs for much of their work and assessments, so they will require a laptop or a tablet.

We employ an ESOL tutor who is available to assist International students on an individual basis. which may include private one on one tuition or in class support.

As well as NCEA ESOL English, in 2021 we are offering an NCEA ESOL Math's class to Year 11 and 12 students. This class offers additional support for students wanting to achieve Maths standards.
