Tile Art

Term 2, Week 10

Emma Dawson —

This week has been a great week with fun activities for students and staff, with Primary Tile Art, the Senior Volleyball competition, and Matariki Celebrations!

Tile Art - On Monday, all Primary students painted a tile as part of a mural installation for the Cheviot Knox Community Centre. Nicola Francis of 'Paint and Create' came down from Auckland to assist the students with their tile painting. The theme was "Life in Cheviot". Nicola will complete outlines on the tiles and put them in the kiln to make the colours pop. The mural installations will hopefully be completed in August, at which time we will visit the Community Centre for a walk through to see the students' completed artwork! Thank you to Jane Maxwell for inviting our tamariki to be part of this, the students loved designing and completing their artwork!

Matariki Celebrations - On Wednesday afternoon we had a Matariki Assembly led by Nukuroa Tirikatene-Nash, to tell us about Matariki and Puanga, and the other constellations that are important to locating Matariki. Our Primary students made their own stars to demonstrate the location of the following constellations in relation to Matariki: Southern Cross (Room 3); Taumata-kuku / Kokota (Room 4); Tautoru / the Pot (Room 3); Puanga / Regal, Betelgeuse and Takurau / Siruis (Room 5) and Te Matou ā Māui / Maui's Fishhook (Room 8).

On Thursday a group of staff, students, and parents met at Gore Bay at 6am to view Matariki and the other constellations. We saw a few glimpses of Matariki between the clouds, as well as the Southern Cross and Te Matou ā Māui (Maui's Fish hook). This was followed by breakfast in the Community Room.

Thank you to Heidi and Nukuroa for your korero, to Dawson for cooking our breakfast, and to Mrs Knight for the fantastic idea to view the stars at Gore Bay!

Pie-day Friday - Thank you everyone for your support with Pie-day Friday! This will continue in Term 3 to fundraise for the Year 5-6 Camp! Matua Toka and Mrs Johnson will notify parents of Camp Information in Term 3, the camp is scheduled for Term 4 so there is still plenty of time to fundraise.

Christchurch School of Rock - If you would like your child to be enrolled in Music lessons please complete this form: https://forms.gle/DkZMmrw3FRDVD3KC6. Students will delve into the fundamental techniques of their chosen instrument while exploring a diverse repertoire that includes contemporary hits and timeless classics, spanning genres from classical to rock.

If you would like your child to be enrolled in Dance lessons please complete this form: https://forms.gle/kiiLjZ66braxEDgn7. Dance lessons will be available within school hours, students will be allowed out of class to attend as long as they are up to date with their school work. Lessons are 30 minutes. Group and individual lessons are available - Hip Hop, Jazz, and Contemporary.

Have a safe and restful holiday, we look forward to seeing everyone back at school for Term 3 on Monday 22nd July!
