CAIMS WINTER TOURNAMENT 2024

Kim Goggin —

We were fortunate to send seven teams to the CAIMS Winter Tournament run by Primary Sports Canterbury.

It was wonderful to see our tamariki out there competing with vigour and pride as they represented Chisnallwood.

A huge thank you to the many parents who came along and supported the teams and to the coaches who willingly give up their time to coach our talented players.

Boys’ Basketball

Congratulations to the boys team who finished 2nd

Congratulations to: Esten Lissaman; Jayce Greenland, Baxter Van Onselen, Benji Randall, Drae Ioane, Nikau Komene, Noah Zhou, Daniel Leka

Girls’ Basketball

The Chisnallwood Dunkers had the awesome opportunity to participate in the CAIMS Winter Tournament at Pioneer Stadium. The girls stepped on the court with their heads held high and ready to take on the competition. Despite facing injuries, sickness, and challenges along the way, they all displayed their resilience in a fantastic manner. There was exceptional improvement amongst the entire team, highlighting their determination during the tournament. With a couple of wins under their belt the girls made the top 4, only just missing out on third place to Cobham 8-12. Overall it was great to see the girls get out there and show off their skills, knowledge, and support their peers also.

Well done to Jessie Baars, Sisila Minogue Iloahevfava, Mila Hesp, Azariah Abohay, Hazel Wawatai, Bentley Hesp, Tanesha Aldwin, Manaia Forde, Sharleah Churcher.

Netball Red

A fantastic effort by our red team this season for Chisnallwood. Leading into the tournament we were undefeated winning all of our games in the Tuesday Caims competition.

Day 1: Monday proved to be no different with 3 wins against Rangi Ruru, Ashburton Green and Cobham Blue.

Day 2: Tuesday the team took their pool with a 4th win against Kirkwood Huia.

For the Quarter final we came up against Heaton. This would be the decider for the Semi’s and Finals. A number of aspects played a key role in this game. Our team had an injury and with no injury time made it difficult to switch players, also one of our defenders losing a shoe she had to continue playing shoeless due to no stoppage time. The girls fought hard as the points were one for one throughout the game but due to these unforeseen circumstances for our team Heaton were able to pull ahead by a couple of points. Unfortunately for the first time this season we took a loss knocking us out of the top 4 positions.

After a much needed reflection the team pulled themselves back into focus going on to win the semi finals against Villa Maria and the final playing off for 5th place which was taken out easily winning against Ashburton Red. Overall still a successful tournament winning 7 out of 8 games finishing with only the one loss this year.

Netball Yellow

The yellow netball team was a combined team for the CAIMS tournament made up of most of the yellow team and some of the green team that competed throughout this year’s season. The girls worked well together after only a single training session in their new team make up and with a new coach. Day one started out against a number of strong teams. Some excellent playing was unfortunately still met with a few losses. The highlight of the day was a very close game between us and Te Aratai college, being equal for most of the game but we came out on top by two goals in the end. On day two we started off with an excellent win that really boosted confidence and mood going into the rest of the day. The final game was hard fought down to the final whistle with the girls fighting back from 5 goals down just after half time to end with only one goal down. The highlight of the tournament was our team chant. We easily had the loudest chant of all the schools which really showed our team spirit.

Charlotte Hughes, Aaliyah Ludke-Reiri, Lexie Macdonald, Sophia Price,Maddie West, Ashlee Jones, Hiramaia Simpson, Astrid Franicevic, Hollie Christensen

Chisnallwood Football

The Chisnallwood Boys Football Team had a great showing at the CAIMS Winter Tournament on Tuesday. The team started the day very strong with three comfortable pool play games scoring 27 goals and conceding just 1.

They entered the quarterfinals full of confidence and came up against a tough Casebrook side. The team went down early in the first half and couldn’t turn the momentum around, finally going down 4-1. The boys showed great resilience and picked themselves up after the disappointment. They had a great performance in the Semi Final against St Thomas’ to comprehensively win 5-1 and then went on to win their Final 3-2 against Ashburton Intermediate to finish 5th overall.

The team had six Year 7 students which will put us in great stead moving forward into 2025.

Joint players of the tournament were awarded to Fergus Page (Tupu-a-Nuku 28) and Zaiden Horvat (Tupu-a-Rangi 30).

A huge well done to all the players from the boys 7’s rugby team. On Tuesday 20th August the boys 7’s rugby team competed at the CAIMS 7’s tournament. The boys started strong winning game 1 against Cobham Intermediate 50-10 in their second pool game the boys lost to Casebrook. This rounded out pool play the boys made the top 8 and played Christchurch South winning 25-10. The boys then moved into the semifinals going down to a strong Ashburton Intermediate 30-10. The day finished with a playoff game for third and fourth against Heaton Intermediate. The boys put in a big effort to come away with the win in overtime to finish the tournament 3rd out of 14 teams. A massive well done for the way the boys played as a team and worked together.

Rugby 7’s Girls

The Chisnallwood girls 7s team were excited to finish their season at Caims with this year being the first time Caims has had a full girls grade.

Our girls had a very successful day at Caims going undefeated, taking out first place. The tournament saw the girls playing 4 pool games back to back with only one sub. The team played hard and worked well as a team moving the ball around the field. It was incredible to see girls who have grown hugely in confidence over the season and step up at the tournament.

The team had two tough games against Shirley Intermediate and Ashburton Intermediate winning both games 25-15 and fighting right till the end of the game to get the wins. It has been a very successful season for the Chissy girls 7s team.

Congratulations girls:  Bella Tweedie, Brylee Middleplaats, Shiloh Gosney, Melissa Thomson, Paetyn Bensley, Ester Leitaua, Lourdaz Timo
