CJCA Yr8 (Canterbury Junior Cricket Association)
Every January since 1963 the South Island Primary Schools Tournament is held for one or two teams of the best selected CJCA Yr8 (Canterbury Junior Cricket Association) players (balanced abilities in each team if two teams are selected) to compete against the best in the South Island over 5 days, with a total of 14 teams playing. This year The CJCA Black team lost to Otago Country in the Final and the CJCA Red Team which contained Corbin McClurg, who bowled very well throughout the tournament, finished 5th, winning the Derek Cockburn Cup.
This year, three teams of CJCA Yr8 players who did not get selected for the main tournament competed in the South Island Primary Shield Tournament, along with teams from hosts Canterbury Country, Dunedin, West Coast, Otago Country, Nelson ,CJCA Yr7 team and a blended CJCA Yr7/8 team, with 16 teams in total.
After 5 days of cricket the Shield Tournament final was played between Otago Country and CJCA Yr7 Black, with the Yr7 Black team winning the Tournament. Douglas Bongartz was in the winning team, and was the top MVP (Most Valuable Player) points scorer for the tournament.
Other Chisnallwood players involved were Yr8 players Ashton Brown, Logan Worthy, with Y7 Jake Wilson in the blended Y7/Y8 team.
The Y7 players for the tournament were players who put their names forward and not "selected" for the teams.
The Shield tournament was a great initiative by Junior cricket to give players who did not make the main tournament a taste of tournament cricket.
