Matariki Library Display

Lynne Hilston —

What is Matariki?

Matariki is the Maori name for a cluster of stars also know as Pleiades. They rise in mid winter, and for many Maori people it heralds the start of the Maori New Year. Traditionally it was a time for remembering the dead, celebrating new life and planting new crops.
