Morning classroom lessons are taught by highly qualified and experienced English-language tutors, and off-campus afternoon outings (the ‘active’ part of the course) are integrated into the schedule to give students valuable opportunities not only to enjoy the many leisure and recreational activities on offer in the Christchurch area but also to apply their classroom learning ‘out there’ in the real world.
The English component of the programme is based on English for Life (Oxford University Press), a practical, skills-based text that equips students for everyday life in New Zealand.* Whether it be introducing oneself to new friends, renting a flat, booking an airline ticket, seeing the doctor or any of a host of other social contexts, this text provides students with the language needed to communicate effectively. The text is supplemented by up to 30 hours of online extension exercises that act as a useful bridge from the protected environment at school to the more challenging requirements beyond the classroom. Finally, pre- and post-course proficiency tests will be administered to establish each student’s initial skill level, measure his/her degree of improvement and identify those specific skill areas most in need of further development.
The afternoon activity outings are designed to provide students with new and exciting experiences. While quality recreation is the primary objective, such outings also have considerable educational value, not only in terms of the students’ acquiring new knowledge (about animals, farming, the environment, New Zealand) and skills (sailing, rock climbing, etc.), but also - and more importantly from a language-learning perspective - of their gaining memories that can be drawn upon later as topics of conversation and writing. Relevant vocabulary and phrase structures are pre-taught to help students make the most of these activities and to talk about them in English.
