International students warmly welcomed to Christchurch
Primary, high school and university students along with their home stay families gathered together for this year's Christchurch City Student Welcome on Tuesday March 28th at the Christchurch Art Gallery.
The event began with food trucks and games outside before a lion dancer invited the students inside for a Mihi to welcome students to Otautahi (Christchurch) . This was then followed by a warm welcome from the Deputy Mayor of Christchurch, Andrew Tuner.
After the formalities, there were different cultural performances, including Kapahaka by Te Puna o Te Aroha, Indian Bhangra from Revel Event, Chinese Lion Dance by the Qiaoyi Lion Dance Team, and live music performance by the Settlers and a street art demonstration. All together offering an opportunity for our student to experience a taste of Christchurch culture while embracing our city's rich diversity!
Students also had a chance to pick up some rugby tips with 101 skills training sessions. Poi making and flax weaving were also introduced for our students to experience our Kiwi culture first hand.
Frank Shi from China, currently studying at Christ's College said he had a great time at the event and loved the Rugby 101 session!
Mark, an international student also goes to Christ's College said the Lion Dancers reminded him about his childhood in China.
"Just so many colors! It was so bright, beautiful, warm and welcoming!"said Neville Rodrigues from India, currently in completing his PhD at the University of Canterbury.
A big thank you goes out to Christchurch City Council, Ara Institute of Canterbury, University of Canterbury and China Southern Airlines, Christchurch Adventure Park, and the International Antarctic Centre for sponsoring the event.
At the prize give away, one lucky student won a flight to Beijing on China Southern Airlines. Several students got tickets to the International Antarctic Centre and 2 students won passes to the Christchurch Adventure Park. We hope they enjoy their prizes!!
