Kent McDonald —

It has been a busy few weeks with BYOD back up and running. Many students have been participating in a range of activities that are engaging and also creative. Great to see some of our junior students using the iPads to read together. Locker art, virtual field trips, Winter Olympics, researching and presentations are some of the other cool things happening across the school.

The Discover team have gone to the dogs! Each week two dogs, Frosty (star of the movie Z for Zachariah), and Fergus, an 11 year old border collie, come to listen to children from HB5/6 read their books, as part of a Reading Dogs Programme. These dogs are trained to work with children and can been seen each week at the Rolleston Library as well, reading with the community. The benefits of this programme are immense. Children enjoy reading to the dogs, they practice their reading books and they learn about caring for animals. Clutha (Fergus's sister, and Mrs Tansey's dog), also spends every Wednesday in Te Kakano, helping with all types of learning, including PE and maths. - Susan Tansey

Netsafe is an excellent resource for parents. Here is some further information regarding BYOD https://www.netsafe.org.nz/byod/
