M&M Maths in Matatea

Clearview —

During Term 4, the students in Matatea have been learning all about Fractions. What better way to do this learning than with lollies!!

In Homebase 13, we learned all about numerators, denominators, mixed numbers and improper fractions. We now know a fraction is a part of a whole and fractions are used to represent smaller pieces (or parts) of a whole.
To celebrate the end of our learning we worked both individually and collaboratively to identify fractions in a set (the different colours in our M&M packets), simplify fractions, and add fractions together. The hardest part was not eating the M&M's until we had finished.

Fun facts:

  • The most common colours were red and brown.
  • Most mini-packs had 15 M&M's, but some students were lucky enough to get 16.
