OSMO in the Matatea Team

Clearview —

This year the Matatea Team has purchased an OSMO for each homebase. But, what is an OSMO?

An Osmo is like a gaming accessory that is designed with reflective artificial intelligence. Osmo games include apps that feature drawing, literacy, physics puzzles, spatial reasoning, coding, and more. Each one offers an "augmented reality" experience where apps bring real-world accessories to life. The camera records the table area in front of the device, which enables the Osmo apps to "see" the objects placed there.

There are a number of different sets that can be purchased to explore and learn from.

In the photos you can see the tamariki playing Pizza Co which involves making pizzas to order, adding and subtracting, and giving change, and there is a Coding Set where a code needs to be made to help a character through different mazes.

Other sets that are used in our team are Tangrams - using shapes to represent pictures, Words - word identification and spelling, Newton - physics problem solving puzzles and Numbers - developing maths skills.

For each set that our tamariki are using, they are developing the digital technology skill of ‘Decomposition - wāwāhi tau’ which is breaking something down into smaller parts to help solve a problem or complete a task.
