Mid Year Reporting

Katie Morriss —

On Thursday 8th July, your child's mid term general comment will be published by their teacher.

We have been working hard behind the scenes in consultation with teachers, team leaders and HERO about our reporting to parents using the overall teacher judgement (OTJ) which comes to you in the form of a progress statement informing you whether your child is working at, above or below expectation.

The reason we have changed from the progress dials to statements is so that parents clearly know where their child is at for literacy and numeracy. Feedback from whānau last year was that some couldn’t understand/interpret the dials and they were unsure of their child's progress and achievement.

It has quickly become apparent though, that if we only share the progress statement with you, it will not show the progress your child has made and may cause unnecessary worry if they are sitting ‘below’ with no further information supplied.

So while we work on this at our end, we are going to delay sending home the progress statements this term. Instead, you will have access to these in Week 2 along with the graph which shows your child's progress. 3 Way Learning Conferences are then the following week so there will be a chance to discuss progress with your child's teacher then.

If your child is working below their expectation, please do not panic. If your child's teacher is concerned about their progress, they will be in touch with you and/or will discuss this at learning conferences next term. If your child is making progress, their teacher is most likely expecting them to move to 'at' by the end of the year so there is no need to be alarmed.

If you are having trouble accessing HERO, please get in touch with one of our helpful admin staff who will be able to troubleshoot with you. It is very important that you regularly check the app to make sure you are signed in and make sure that you have email and sound notifications enabled so you don't miss important information.
