WOW Writing from Matatea Team

Tracey Young —

I was very fortunate this week to pop over and join Matatea team during their Literacy block. Below is a selection of writing from their quick writes or a time when the students have displayed resilience. Ka pai tō mahi Matatea team!

The Dramatic Fishing Trip

Finally, the day had arrived. I quickly got everything and geared up. After I geared up I cast the rod. I was very excited and kinda nervous. Very slowly I reeled the line back in but I got nothing so I cast another few times. I finally got a bite so I yelled at everyone to come as I reeled it in. I was so excited, kind of nervous, and very curious because I thought it was going to be a big one. But instead, it was a bunch of seaweed! I was very disappointed and I was very mad. I just wanted to give up.

So I gave up. After a while, my dad came and said, “Don’t give up. Eventually, you will get something!” So I quickly got up with excitement and cast a few more times and I got … nothing. I said to my dad, “Let’s change spots.” I quickly started to reel the line in but then suddenly…. I got something. The fish pulled the rod as fast as lightning! So I quickly shouted, “I’VE GOT A FISH!” Everyone came and I quickly gave the rod to my dad. My heart was beating faster than it could and my feet were shivering. After a big fight, we finally caught the fish.

I learned a lesson that day, never think you can’t do it!

Going up a Hill

It was a beautiful sunny day, we biked from my house to Brookside Park. When we reached Brookside Park we saw a little hill, we went over to the hill. Before I go to the top of the hill I would speed up. When I started to go up I didn't have enough speed so I tried to pedal my bike harder. I tried and tried but I didn't reach the top. I felt like I kept failing and I got unhappy and frustrated. My dad said that I need to change my gear, so I did. I tried and tried but it was still hard until . . .I did it! I reach the top! I was happy, excited, and proud. After that I did it again and it got easier.

The little girl loved to take photos, but she dropped her camera and it broke. She sighed and her head dropped so she put it in the bin in disbelief. Then she walked home. But the camera came alive and jumped out of the bin and started chasing the girl but the camera kept breaking as it was running, but he did not give up. The little girl was about to get into her house and the camera took a photo and threw it at her. She saw it, picked it up, looked at it, threw it away and she closed the door. The camera didn't give up though. He took lots of photos and made her with the photos that he took of random things. She saw it and smiled. Then when she looked down the camera was there. She was so relieved. She hugged it.

There was a camera and a little girl. The little girl loved her camera but one day her camera broke. So she checked it in the bin. He was still alive! The camera showed resilience by fixing himself up and used lots of photos of the sunset to make one big photo of the girl. She showed resilience by carrying on to the end.
